UASF Updates #2 – 11.13.20

Negotiations Actions:

The UASF Negotiations Team met with the District Negotiations Team for 2.5  hours today. Here is information for you:

  1. Return to Worksites:  Deputy Superintendent Ford-Morthel joined the negotiations for the first time today. As previously announced, the dates to return to worksites are being negotiated. None of our members are required to return to work at sites on November 16.

  2. Evaluation Update:  All bargaining unit members who (a) met standards in all competency elements in their 2019-20 Leadership Action Plan (LAP) or Leadership Appraisal and Development Plan (LAD) and (b) are not on an improvement plan by December 1, 2020, will be evaluated using a Leadership Plan "Short Form" per CBA Article 10.2.3., for the 2020-21 school year.

  3. Crisis Hybrid Learning MOU:  Both negotiations teams committed to meeting for extended periods of time twice next week to continue working towards agreement on the UASF Crisis Hybrid Learning MOU. As mentioned at our Monday evening membership meeting, even though an MOU does not require member ratification according to our Bylaws, we feel that it is imperative to have your ratification on such an important agreement.

Return to Worksite and the UASF Crisis Hybrid Learning MOU Actions:

  1. 11.10.20 UASF made a statement at the recent BOE meeting that our members need the UASF Crisis Hybrid MOU in place prior to returning to worksites with an emphasis on personal and family health, safety, flexibility and testing.

  2. 11.10.20 UASF Executive Board Members, Elementary Division Elected Representatives Luis Rodriguez and Emmanuel Stewart also spoke emphasizing safety and health and having our MOU in place.

  3. 11.10.20 UASF Central Office Member Lizzy Hull-Barnes also spoke requesting the same.

Communications with the Press this Week:

  1. 11.12.20 Communications with Jill Tucker-UASF exchanged several emails and had a phone conversation with Jill Tucker regarding the recent article. UASF informed her that site leaders were upset about the optics of the article. She expressed that it was not her intention to imply that site leaders working remotely delayed the opening of schools planning. She stated she has high respect for Principals. We will work with her to promote future positive articles about our members.

  2. 11.12.20 President Satoda sent a letter drafted by many members, to the Editor of the SF Chronicle, to clarify that our site leaders working remotely have not been the cause of a delay in the opening of schools planning and that site leaders have been working both remotely and regularly at sites.

  3. 11.11.20 Two UASF members wrote a letter to the Chronicle editor addressing the same concerns.

  4. 11.12.20 UASF spoke with the Mission Local News and communicated similar information as we did with the Chronicle, that our site leaders are working harder and longer hours remotely and at sites as needed to meet the needs of students and their caregivers, staff and school community members.

The Renaming of School Site Actions:

  1. 10.27.20-UASF read a statement written by a cohort of site leaders to the BOE requesting that the renaming of schools be delayed until we return to in-person learning. The letter was forwarded to the BOE.

  2. 11.10.20-UASF read a second statement written by a cohort of site leaders to the BOE repeating the request to delay the renaming of schools until we return to in-person learning. This letter was supported by approximately 92 site leaders and forwarded to the BOE, Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendent Myong Leigh, and Chris Armentrout.

  3. 11.10.20 and 11.13.20-UASF emailed the District and President Sanchez with the following:

  • Clarify the expectations for sites and site leaders based on the 11.10.20 BOE conversation

  • Recommend that schools participate in the renaming process in phases and begin with those schools who are ready to do so

  • Recommend the four school site committees at each of the schools inform the district if they are ready to move forward with renaming or provide the District with a time their school will be ready

SFUSD Labor Unions Actions:

  • UASF has been meeting weekly with other SFUSD Labor Unions consistently for the past 6 months to align our priorities and have spoken at BOE meetings to support other units

  • UASF representatives have been active participants in monthly SF Labor Council meetings, and sponsored events and political action activities  for the past 20 years or so
